History of Slip & Fall Prevention

2004

RSI joins with TCNA/ANSI A 108 and the University of Wuppertal, Germany to define operating parameter for a portable tribometer for measuring walkway slip resistance. RSI produces its first Binary Output Tribometer designated “BOT 3000.”

2007

Dr. Jens Sebald, University of Wuppertal, Germany, publishes his doctoral dissertation establishing the high correlation between the BOT 3000 tribometer and human subject walking, when measuring, achieved slip resistance.

2012

Release of the American National Standard ANSI A 137.1-12, designating the BOT 3000 as the only approved device for testing the slip resistance of ceramic, glass, and stone floor tiles.

2015

Introduction of the model BOT 3000 E, incorporating Bluetooth capability and the STEP reporting app, as well as enhanced forensic features. RSI joins with the University of North Texas, College of Engineering, to create a certification curriculum for professional walkway auditors based on the ASTM standard F 2948-13 “Walkway Auditor Qualifications.”

2017

Release of the American National Standard ANSI A 326.3-17 designating the BOT 3000E as the only approved device for testing the slip resistance of all hard surface pedestrian walkways.

2018

Certification of the BOT 3000E to the standard ASTM 2508-16, documenting the accuracy, repeatability, and reproducibility of the device.

2022

Release of the American National Standard ANSI A 326.3-22,which expands the scope of the slip resistance measurement standard to include five product use classifications of Interior Wet, Interior Dry, Exterior Wet, Exterior Dry, Grease/oil. Each classification defines a specific slip resistance threshold, as measured by the BOT 3000E.

2023

RSI merges with Walkway Management Group, a specialist in slip resistant coatings.

2024

Release of the International Code Council (ICC) standard “International Swimming Pool and Spa Code,” which mandates slip resistance testing per ANSI A 326-22 using the BOT 3000E tribometer. Work continues on incorporating ANSI A 326.3-22 and the BOT 3000E into the ICC International Building Code. Release date: TBD.
